2nd Phase of Security Switch to Begin before Bonn Conference: Wardak

KABUL - The second phase of security transition from foreign troops to Afghan forces would be launched ahead of the Bonn Conference, the minister of defense said on Tuesday.
Balkh, Daikundi, Takhar, Samangan, Kabul and Nimroz provinces and Jalalabad, Chaghcharan, Shiberghan, Faizabad, Ghazni, Maidan Shahr, Qala-i-Naw cities are included in the second phase.

Addressing the Defense Commission of the Wolesi Jirga, Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak said the Afghan security personnel had the ability to take the security responsibility.

"I assure my countrymen that we would try our best to make the transition process a success," the minister said, urging the people to cooperate with Afghan forces in maintaining security.

A public representative from Kabul, Syed Husain Anwari, said there was a need for equipping Afghan forces to ensure national security. "We appreciate the morale of Afghan forces, but with their existing facilities, I don't think, they would be able to keep security effectively."

Head of the commission, Shukriya Barakzai, asked the security forces should assure the masses of their capability to defend the country after the withdrawal of NATO-led troops.
