Security Situation has Improved: MoD

KABUL - With insurgent attacks falling, improvement has been noticed in the security situation over the past three months, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on Wednesday.
Rocket strikes, bomb blasts, suicide attacks and other insurgent-related activities had considerably decreased, MoD spokesman Zahir Azimi said, linking the improvement to 27 offensives currently ongoing across the country.

Azimi the military operations had been launched at different times in several parts of the country. The offensives would continue, he said, adding some operations that started in July were still ongoing.

According to Azimi, the Afghan National Army (ANA) strength has reached 176,000. Another 32,000 troops are under training. He said the soldiers were equipped with weapons of international standards to provide better security.

"Efforts are being made to equip ANA troops to enable them to maintain security of the country on their own until 2014 when all foreign troops will depart," he concluded.
