Majority of Afghans Want Republic System to be Preserved in Taliban Talks: Poll

KABUL - A majority of Afghans want the republic system to be preserved in peace talks with the Taliban, a poll showed on Thursday.
A total of 8,465 people were interviewed in the survey which was conducted by the Institute of War and Peace Studies.
Asked if they supported creation of an interim government, 54.2 percent of the respondents said that “yes”.
30.5 percent of the respondents said that that an interim government should not be formed, while 15.2 percent were indifferent.
Based on the survey, 85.6 percent of the people are optimistic about peace talks and believe that they can bring to the conflict.
The survey also revealed that 69 percent of the respondents prefer the Islamic Republic as the best prescription to maintain sustainable peace in the country while only 7 percent opted for Islamic Emirate.
Thirty-six percent of the respondents cited Taliban’s cruelty as their source of concern about the group.
Under the US-Taliban deal, all foreign troops would withdraw from Afghanistan by May next year, conditions permitting.
According to the survey, 35 percent of the respondents expressed their concern about the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.
The poll also showed that 41.5 percent of the respondents would leave Afghanistan if they got a chance. (1TV NEWS)
