World Urges Humanitarian Ceasefire, Halt to Civilian Casualties

KABUL - On International Peace Day, the global community has urged a humanitarian ceasefire and end to the ongoing bloodshed that has been claiming innocent lives in Afghanistan.
The United Nations Assistant Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) on its twitter handler wrote: “As we celebrate International #PeaceDay, a reminder of the toll war is taking on #Afghanistan’s civilians. We're concerned by high numbers of civilian casualties and urge parties to take immediate measures to protect them, and create conducive atmosphere for #Doha peace talks.”
The mission said “civilian casualty numbers, a key indicator of conflict’s intensity, are at a lower level than in recent years. But UNAMA preliminary findings show as many as 20 civilians killed and 39 injured --including women, boys and girls-- in four separate incidents on Saturday.”
NATO Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) stressed that the historic opportunity for peace in #Afghanistan should be seized and reaffirmed "#NATO allies and partners commitment to contribute to an environment where sustainable, lasting and inclusive peace was possible.
Germany said it strongly supported call for #humanitarianceasefire and end of violence in Afghanistan. The country said current level of bloodshed and violence was unacceptable as it was not what the people expected from the Afghan peace process
On International Day of Peace, the EU expressed its deep concern about the surge in violence with unprecedented high numbers of civilian casualties. “We renew our call on the Taliban to stop the violence now and commit to a ceasefire as soon as possible.” (Pajhwok)
