Iran, Afghanistan to Complete Border Railway Station Soon

TEHRAN - Iranian Deputy Transport and Urban Development Minister Kheirollah Khademi announced that the Khaf-Herat railway station will be completed by the end of autumn.
"Khaf-Herat Railway border stations are under construction at zero points of common borderlines and will be complete in less than three months," Khademi said.
He pointed out that part of the railway will be constructed by Iran with Afghanistan doing the remaining part.
"Khaf-Herat railroad is one of the largest projects we are working to put into operation," Khademi added.
Khaf-Herat railway, 35 kilometers in length, will connect the Iraqi rail network to Central Asia.
Khaf-Herat is part of the Iran-Afghanistan rail corridor. The project which started in the fiscal year of 2007-2008, connects Iran’s Eastern city of Khaf to Afghanistan’s Western city of Ghoryan.
In relevant remarks in late August, Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Amir Mahmoud Ghaffari announced that Khaf-Herat Railway project would come on stream during the Unity Week (October 29- Nov. 3, 2020) with presidents of Iran and Afghanistan, as well as other top officials of the two countries in attendance.
He underlined the strategic significance of this railway both in the region and the world.
The railway is important both for internal transportation and passenger transport, Ghaffari noted, adding that it is very important in terms of connecting Afghanistan to free waters and even European countries.
“On the other hand, transportation and transit of cargo and goods to Afghanistan and then to East Asian countries is considered very important for Iran,” the official went on to say.
