Pakistan Calls for Dignified Return of Afghan Refugees

PESHAWAR - Pakistan and the United Nations have conferred the Afghan peace process and the dignified return of refugees to their homeland.
Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary general’s special representative for Afghanistan (SRSG), met Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Islamabad on Monday.
Qureshi commended UNAMA’s role in supporting Afghanistan’s socio-economic development in line with its mandate, a statement from the Foreign Office said.
Qureshi highlighted Pakistan’s facilitative role in the Afghan peace process and said Islamabad’s efforts had been acknowledged by the international community.
Pakistan was keen on seeing the peace process to move forward, which would help reduce in violence and deny space to ‘spoilers’ who did not wish to see the restoration of peace and stability in the region.
He also highlighted the steps taken by Pakistan to support Afghanistan in transit trade and movement of people, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The foreign minister urged UNAMA to play an active role in helping with the time-bound and well-resourced return of Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment for safe and dignified return of Afghan refugees and their sustainable reintegration in the Afghan society.
Qureshi assured SRSG Lyons of Pakistan’s support to UNAMA in promoting the shared objective of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan. (Pajhwok)
