Violence against Journalists Increases to 38%

KABUL - The head of Nye Media Watch on Tuesday said that violence against journalists in Afghanistan rose to 38 percent in 2011.
A report published by Nye Media Watch shows that 80 percent of violent cases against journalists including murder, injury, beating and threatening have been recorded in 2011, while it was 58 cases in 2010.
Afghanistan is still an unsafe country for journalists, Head of Nye Media Watch, SediqullahTawhidi said at a news conference.

Mr.Tawhidi believes that the main reason for this increase is lack of punishment for those who commit violence against journalists.

"Unfortunately the violence rate against journalists increased unexpectedly in 2011," SediqullahTawhidi added.

Nye Media Watch says 49 cases out of 80 include torture, detention and other threats, 9 cases of murder and injuring by Taliban, 4 cases of violence by NATO troops, and 18 cases of violence by unknown figures have been recorded.
