Drug Traffickers will Be Prosecuted: Patey

KABUL - The British Ambassador to Afghanistan, William Patey, on Wednesday warned that the drug traffickers will face prosecution.
While visiting the Counter Narcotics Justice Centre he said that his country will fully co-operate with counter narcotics in Afghanistan.
London is committed to fight drug cultivation and production in Afghanistan, he added.

"This is a very difficult task as the production of opium goes down, the price goes up; the temptations become greater this is not an easy problem to solve," Mr Patey added.

Fighting narcotics is part of the strategic pact signed between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and UK's Prime Minister David Cameron.

This comes as the United Nation's Office of Drug and Crime said on Friday that revenues from opium production in the country rose to 133 percent in 2011.

Afghanistan supplies 90 percent of the world's opium despite the efforts of the government and its international allies to curb production.

The money earned from the opium is reportedly used to provide weapons for the insurgents.

Britain is committed to stand by Afghanistan beyond 2014 and prevent intervention of the neighbors.

There are around 9,000 British soldiers in Afghanistan most of them based in the southwestern province of Helmand. Helmand is considered to be the leading drug provider around the world.
