Senate Oks Budget, Recommends Cuts

KABUL CITY - The Meshrano Jirga, recommending cuts worth more than 12 billion afghanis ($0.24 billion), on Tuesday approved the draft budget for the current fiscal year.
The budget was presented by Finance Minister on Feb. 5, with 134.3 billion afghanis ($2.7 billion) set aside for general budget and 110 billion afghanis for development.

He said the next year's budget would start from December 22 based on amendments in the relevant rules by Parliament on October 17, 2011.
Of the 54 senators present during Tuesday's session, 30 voted in favor of the budget and 19 against it. Four votes were found blank.

Budgetary and Finance Commission head, Maulvi Abdul Wahab Irfan, said the budget had been approved with a recommendation for 12.514 billion afghanis cuts. The recommendation was floated after being discussed with relevant commissions, he said.

Under Articles 75 and 98 of the Constitution, the budget should be approved in line with the national development strategy and its implementation should pave the ground for the development of all parts of the country.
Irfan said the draft budget was being sent to the lower house with recommendations of the Senate.
