Senators Cobble Together New Alliance

KABUL - Members of the Meshrano Jirga, or upper house of Parliament, on Tuesday announced the formation of a new political alliance that would work to ensure respect for the law and promote national unity.
"The parliamentary group is aimed at adherence to the law and ending prejudices to pave the ground for national solidarity," the coalition head, Maulvi Abdul Wahab Irfan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Irfan, who represents northern Takhar province, claimed that senators speaking different languages and having different political and ethnic backgrounds were members of the grouping.

Sadiqa Balkhi from Balkh and Hidayatullah Rahayee from Bamyan have been appointed as first and second deputies and Hafiz Abdul Qayum, a lawmaker from eastern Nuristan province, as secretary of the alliance.

Deputy Chairman Mohammad Alam Ezedyar said the alliance members were expected to step up efforts at enforcing the law. Last month, the senators created a 40-membr group called "Reforms and Justice". (Pajhwok)
