ANA Must Be National,  Professional and a Political: Karzai

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai met General James Mattis, Commander of US CENTCOM to discuss several issues including situation in Afghanistan and the region.
In the meeting also attended by Afghan Minister of Defense, General Rahim Wardak and Dr. Spanta, National Security Advisor to the President, both sides exchanged views on various issues of mutual interest including the need for continued capacity building and further equipping of the Afghan security forces.

President Karzai stressed on the need for a national, professional and apolitical army to Afghanistan and underscored that recruitments be made in the armed forces of Afghanistan based on professional merits.

The President said that the Afghan National Army (ANA) be further equipped by the international community and the United States.

General Mattis reaffirmed that the United States is committed to help Afghanistan in this respect.

The structure, equipping and financing of the ANA forces were also among the topics discussed in the meeting. (PR)
