Karzai Orders Probe into Intelligence Failure

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai, praising the Afghan forces for their sacrifices, said on Monday suicide attackers' entry into Kabul and other provinces showed the intelligence failure of Afghan and NATO troops.
Several militants, laced with guns and suicide vests, attacked high-security offices in Sherpur, Paktiakot, Darul Aman and Pul-i-Charkhi areas soon after they took positions in different buildings at about 1:30pm on Sunday. They put up stiff residence for 18 hours.
A statement issued by the Presidential Palace said Karzai strongly denounced the militant blitz and directed the relevant authorities to launch an investigation into the intelligence failure.

Thirty-six militants, 11 Afghan security personnel and four civilians were killed in the near-simultaneous attacks in Kabul, Paktia, Logar and Nangarhar. Thirty-two civilians and 42 security forces were wounded.
Interior Minister Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi told a news conference 36 attackers, eight Afghan forces and three civilians were killed and 65 others, including 25 civilians, wounded in the attacks.

Lauding Afghan forces for their timely response, Karzai said: "They have proved that they can defend the country successfully." He also praised the soldiers for their ability to minimize civilian casualties and control the situation.

"The terrorists, playing into outsiders' hands, should realize that they cannot prevent Afghans from development and achieving peace and stability with such attacks," the statement quoted the president as saying.
Karzai extended his sympathies to families of victims and prayed for the swift recovery of the wounded. (Pajhwok)
