Ambitious Uplift Strategy Mapped out for Tokyo Conference

KABUL - Afghanistan would present a development proposal budget for 22 programs, which needs $8 billion yearly over a decade, at the forthcoming Tokyo donors' conference.
At the international conference in Japan this July, officials from the international community will deliberate the funding mechanism for Afghanistan's future development.

Addressing a press conference on last year's programs, Finance Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhelwal said they had formulated strategies to seek international assistance after 2014 -- a deadline for foreign soldiers' withdrawal.
He said 22 key programs -- aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan's economy, improving the country's domestic revenue and providing employment -- would be included in the proposal.

Zakhelwal said in the next two weeks the amount of money needed to fund the programs would be finalized.

But Dr. Syed Habib Ahmadzai, head of the ministry's coordination board and secretariat department, said that to implement the 22 programs, they would need about $8 billion each year.
The finance minister hoped the international community would endorse the proposed budget to fund Afghanistan economy after 2014. (Pajhwok)
