Karzai Prioritizes Anti-Graft Drive

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Sunday said his administration would remain focused on ensuring good governance and combating corruption over the next two years.
The president called an extra ordinary meeting of representatives from the judiciary, executive and legislature to discuss the two pressing issues ahead of the Tokyo conference in July.

A statement from his office said the president, during a meeting with audit officials, praised the establishment of a school of accountability and hoped it would play a key role in curbing corruption and bringing about good governance.

Afghanistan Auditor General Dr. Mohammad Sharif Sharifi said his department was independent and oversaw financial activities of the three state pillars.
He added audits at ministries and provincial departments were ongoing, but auditors had not been extended the required level of cooperation.

Sharifi claimed there were some parallel institutions that obstructed efforts at banishing corruption and improving governance, calling for such structures to be reviewed.
He said the school of accountability was brought into being to strengthen efforts at countering corruption.

Karzai said the main reason behind the nation's backwardness was a deficiency of skills in certain fields. If the nation was provided with such facilitates, it could achieve a prosperous future. (Pajhwok)
