AHOOA Asks Karzai to Suspended Zakhilwal

KABUL - The Head of Afghanistan's High Office of Oversight and Anti-Corruption (AHOOA), Azizullah Lodin, has sent a letter to President Karzai asking to suspend Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal as the Finance Minister until the issues surrounding his bank accounts have been further investigated.

"I have sent a letter to President Karzai and asked him to suspend the jobs of anyone who is involved in corruption," Mr Lodin said on Saturday.

His request came after recent TOLOnews findings revealed that over USD $1.5 million were deposited into Zakhilwal's various accounts. The average monthly salary for a minister is $2,000.

Zakhilwal claims that he earned the money from his private ventures and also has been fundraising for Karzai's 2014 presidential campaign.

Meanwhile, Afghan legislators have called the transactions controversial and Habiba Danish, a member of Parliament said he should "not be only summoned to Parliament but also be tried."

President Karzai recently issued a decree calling on government agencies respond seriously to corruption allegations. (Tolo News)
