Karimov Considers Establishing Dialogue Group on Afghanistan Necessary

TASHKENT - Uzbek President Islam Karimov considers it necessary to establish a dialogue group on Afghanistan with participation of the neighboring countries, the U.S., NATO and Russia.

Karimov made this statement at a grand meeting in Tashkent on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Uzbekistan.

"We firmly believe that in the current situation, in order to prevent such negative developments it is necessary to return back to the most acceptable option - establishment of a dialogue group of countries - Afghanistan's neighbors with the participation of the U.S., NATO and Russia under the UN auspices," Karimov said.

Uzbek President pointed to the growing threat to security in the region related to the forthcoming withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan.

"The risk of deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan and around it due to withdrawal of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2014 causes great concern," Karimov said.

He said this country eats of terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking may become active again, and the general situation may be out of control.

According to influential experts, it is not excluded these developments can turn the current confrontation into incidents between nations and peoples, restore the civil war in Afghanistan, as well as various security threats may appear in the region as a whole, Karimov reminded.

The main goal of the dialogue group on Afghanistan should be reconciliation of opposing forces and formation of a coalition government of this country.
"There is no other alternative to address this problem," President Karimov said. (Agencies)
