KABUL - The anti-corruption efforts in Afghanistan will fail if they are not taken seriously, the High Office of Oversight and Anti Corruption (HOO) chief said Thursday.

Azizullah Lodin on Thursday said that the government should do more to fight corruption in the country otherwise it could become one of its biggest challenges.

"The government should be more serious in fighting corruption otherwise it will be a major disaster for Afghanistan," Lodin said.

The Afghan government has made serious pledges to the international community both at the Tokyo and Chicago summit towards eradicating corruption in order to continue to the flow of aid to the country, but the action is lacking.

Afghanistan was ranked first alongside two other countries for its public sector corruption out of 176 nations surveyed by Transparency International this year. Last year it was third. (Tolo News)
