KABUL - Pakistani foreign officials on Friday said Islamabad plans to release all Afghan Taliban prisoners still in its detention, including the group's former second-in-command Mullah Baradar.

"The remaining detainees, we are coordinating, and they will be released subsequently," Jilani said at a news conference in Abu Dhabi.

Asked if the former Taliban number 2 Mullah Baradar would be among those released, he said: "The aim is to release all."

It comes as the Islamic fundamentalist group Taliban has been welcomed by the State of Qatar to open an office in the capital, Doha, for the purpose of holding talks to achieve peace and security in Afghanistan.

According to the statement, Obama and Karzai said that they would support an office in Doha for the purpose of negotiations between the High Peace Council and the authorised representatives of the Taliban.

Stressing the importance of advancing the Afghan peace process through the High Peace Council, the two presidents insisted that the outcome of peace and reconciliation must respect any achievement made by Afghanistan. This included protecting the constitutional rights of all Afghan citizens, the statement added.

The Taliban recently said in a statement that along with the office in Qatar, the group asked for Taliban detainees held at the American military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, be released. (Tolo News)
