Rassoul Hints at Post-2014 Ties with NATO

KABUL - Thousands of Afghans, many of them innocent civilians, had laid down their lives to let their compatriots live with dignity and look to a future of lasting peace and prosperity, he said, according to a statement from the foreign ministry in Kabul.

Rassoul told a meeting of NATO and ISAF foreign ministers in Brussels: “We’re also cognizant of the enormous sacrifices of our international allies, including the men and women of NATO members and partner nations in different parts of Afghanistan...”

He hinted at the possibility of a long-term enduring partnership between Afghanistan and the alliance, including its members that desired continued defense cooperation with Afghanistan after 2014.

Such cooperation, including the possible presence of international forces in Afghanistan after 2014, must be based on a set of principles, notably respect for Afghan sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity, he explained.

“This means that in the period after 2014, a sovereign, independent Afghanistan will be engaging with its partners and allies in the region and beyond based on its national interests, our shared interests and mutual respect.”

He also referred to negotiations on a Bilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Agreement with the US, saying three rounds of constructive talks had been held since November.

The agreement will specify US forces mission, scope and objectives besides providing the necessary legal basis and exemptions required for a continued American military presence on Afghan territory after 2014. (Pajhwok)
