Foreign Members Could be Effective on Polls Transparency: TEFA

KABUL - The Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) on Tuesday said that presence of two foreigners in the Electoral Complaints Commission could increase people's trust in the election process, calling their presence as effective.

The transparent election foundation commission says the law of governing election commission and electoral complaints commission does not clearly rule on selection of two civil society's members as members of election.

Although the foundation " TEFA " calls approval of the law of governing election commission and electoral complaints commission effective in the transparency of the coming presidential election, but says that it has not enough clearance about appointment of civil society members as members of the election Commission.

According to the law, members of the Independent Election commission have to be appointed by a selected committee.

"The approval of the law of governing independent election commission is a positive move on election and the committee which is going to select election commission members, but cannot guarantee transparency of the election," Head of TEFA Naeem Ayoubi said.

Meanwhile, the Free and Fair Election Foundation FEFA believes that signing of the law by President Karzai will further help on transparency of the election.

"This law increases the transparency process and will be effective on the independence of the electoral commissions," Head of Free and Fair Election Foundation Nader Naderi said.

The law of governing election commission was approved four months ago by the Afghan parliament and sent to the Senate. The senators objected to the presence of two foreigners in the electoral complaints commission and creation of a committee for selecting election commissions' members.

According to the law, the head and members of the independent election commission will be selected from university lecturers, civil society members and persons proposed by both houses.

The United Nations can also introduce an observer to monitor transparency of the presidential election. (Tolo News)
