KABUL - President Hamid Karzai -- currently on a visit to Poland -- discussed issues of bilateral interest, including the reconciliation drive, with British Prime Minister David Cameron in a telephone conversation, his office said on Thursday.

The two leaders conferred on the peace process, relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan and a follow-up to the agreements made in the third trilateral summit among the UK, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Cameron had hosted the meeting at Chequers in London in early February, when the summiteers agreed on Pakistan’s support for the Afghan-led peace process, a joint conference of Afghan and Pakistan Ulema in Kabul, regional cooperation and the opening of a Taliban office in Doha for negotiations with the High Peace Council.

During the conversation, the president recalled his talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani in Brussels last month. The stalled peace effort and tensions between the neighbors figured prominently at the trilateral meeting, hosted by Kerry.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Karzai denounced the killing of three British troops in a roadside bombing in southern Helmand province. For his part, Cameron condemned the assassination of the provincial peace council head in a Taliban assault.

Also on Wednesday, Karzai met the Afghan expatriates in Poland and highlighted the efforts being made by his administration to bring lasting peace to the war-torn country. He also referred to negotiations on a bilateral security pact with the US, the statement added. (Pajhwok)
