MPs Scuffle over Higher Education Draft

KABUL - Afghan lawmakers on Saturday scuffled over a seven-year delayed higher education-related terms on what the third article of the law allowed Dari expressions to be used beside those of usual in Pashto language.

The higher education law included seven chapters and 72 articles, with the fourth and fifth still remained controversial among the lawmakers.

The independent oversight commission on implementation of the constitution, commission on the higher education’s academic and affairs regulation and the Supreme Court have sent letters to the commissions of the higher education of the Wolesi Jerga to preserve the constitutional 16th article based national expressions.

Some lawmakers said no one has the right to amend the terms which are based on the constitution, as an MP, Mirbat Khan Mangal said the word of Puhantoon (a name linguistically called for university in Pashto) has remained from the last long era and when “We change the name; then we are compelled to change the entire names used in Pashto such Wolesi Jerga (national assembly), Meshrano Jerga (upper house).

But some other said using another alternative word would linguistically help development of languages, as an influential MP and former house of people speaker, Mohammad Younus Qanoni believe the move to use the word Danishga beside preserving the expression would never negate the term, but would also help remove dispute among the students beside securing the Dari speaking people right.

Another lawmaker, Ahmad Behzad said the terms and words shouldn’t be taken in restriction, otherwise the next generations would be plunged into dispute.

The executive board of the house of people decided to send the subject to the oversight commission on implementation of the constitution for final decision. (WNA)
