KABUL - Haji Mohammad Mohaqqiq, Leader of Afghanistan National Front (ANF) and prominent Hazara leader, escaped unhurt in a bomb blast in the Pul-e-Surkh area of Kabul city. The heavy blast that shattered the windows of many buildings in the area, left three civilians dead and 30 others, including nine guards, wounded on Tuesday.

The improvised explosive device had been planted in the area to target Haji Mohaqiq, said Kabul crime investigation chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Zahir.

He said three civilians were killed and 30 others, including bodyguards of Haji Mohaqiq, were wounded in the blast.

According to eyewitness three people were dead on the spot and several injured people, including a woman were laying at the site. Moments later, ambulances arrived at the scene to shift the wounded to hospitals, he said.

Haji Mohaqqiq while talking to the Daily Outlook Afghanistan said he did not know how he survived as it was a huge blast that took place when he was riding in his vehicle together with his security guards.

Haji Mohaqiq is also a senior member of the body set up by President Hamid Karzai in 2010 to help broker a peace pact with the Taliban, the High Peace Council.

The leader Afghanistan National Front (ANF) and head of People's Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan, Haji Mohaqiq fought the Taliban before the U.S. invasion in 2001.
