Kubis Extols Election Preparations; Vows Assistance

KABUL - The United Nations (UN) on Thursday announced support for a democratic and inclusive election in Afghanistan, saying the country remained in focus of the international community.

Jan Kubis, the secretary-general’s special envoy, told a press conference in Kabul donors had promised support for the 2014 presidential and provincial election at the UN Security Council meeting in New York.

He said the global fraternity remained willing to provide assistance for transparent elections based on the Afghan government recommendation.

Ongoing preparations for polls were better than the previous polls, he acknowledged, saying the UN Security Council had welcomed approval of a draft electoral law by the parliament.

“Afghanistan remains in focus of the international community and the UN Security Council will continue assisting the war-torn country beyond 2014,” Kubis promised.

He made clear holding a credible election would be the key to luring regional and international support. The UN will provide technical and logistic assistance to the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).

The world body would try to get the IECC financial aid and counsel it on holding polls to international standards, Kubis promised.

Monitoring the process was a basic requirement and the European Union (EU) was committed to sending observers to Afghanistan, he maintained. (Pajhwok)
