More Afghans  to Participate in  Upcoming Elections: Survey Finds

KABUL - Based on Democracy International findings, around 85 percent of Afghans plan to participate in the upcoming presidential election.

The survey report is based on interviews conducted in 34 provinces of Afghanistan, where around 2,500 Afghans have been questioned about the upcoming elections.

A member of the Democracy International, Yaseen Hussaini told reporters that 77 percent of the Afghans believe that security challenges was one of the main issues which threatens the elections.

Mr. Hussaini further added that 46 percent of those who were interviewed have no idea about the security situation during the election days.

According to Hussaini, only 9 percent Afghans believe that the elections will not be transparent, however, 48 percent others believe that the elections will be transparent up to some extent.

While 14 percent others believe that the elections will be organized in a transparent way, but 28 percent others said they were not sure regarding the transparency of the elections, Hussaini added.

In the meantime, 33 percent believe that Afghanistan is moving on the right direction, and described reconstruction projects and facilitation of education for girls as the main motives.

However, 21 percent believe that Afghanistan is moving on the wrong direction due to lack of security, weak governance and growing corruption, Hussaini said. (KP)
