ECC to Refer Candidate Criminal Cases Soon

KABUL - Nadir Mohseni, spokesman for the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC), on Monday said that officials had assessed seven criminal claims filed against Presidential candidates and would forward them on to the Attorney General in the coming days for a final review before any decisions are made.

According to Mohseni, there is a good chance there will be changes made to the list of 11 candidates now set to run in the elections.

Meanwhile, a number of Afghan legislators have demanded that the names of the candidates accused of war crimes and human rights abuses be disclosed. But the ECC has said that names of the found guilty of crimes would only be publicized after they have been eliminated from the list on account of a verdict of the court.

"The ECC has decided to refer the documents and complaints filed against the candidates regarding involvement in human rights violations, land grabbing and war crimes to the Attorney General soon," Mohseni said. "Of course, the names of the candidates will be eliminated from the list if found guilty by the courts."

MPs encouraged the ECC to see the process through, and not let any candidates skirt by with troubling records.

"If the ECC believes that it is an independent institution, then it should eliminate names of human rights violators and war criminals from the list," Herat MP Nahid Farid said. "

"Undoubtedly, there are names of human rights violators among the eleven candidates, still the ECC has opportunity to prevent them from running in the elections," Herat MP Reza Khoshak Watandost added." (Tolo News)
