No Political will to Fight Corruption in Afghanistan

No Political will to Fight Corruption in Afghanistan

KABUL The new head of the anti-corruption department of Afghanistan has criticized the government of Afghanistan for the lack of political will to take practical steps in fight against corruption in the country.

Ghulam Hussaian Fakhri, who has recently been appointed as head of the office of oversight and anti-corruption of Afghanistan, has said that the people of Afghanistan should not expect a strict action by the government of Afghanistan to fight corruption.

Mr. Fakhri further added that the structures of the Afghan government have been made in a way, which considers goodwill towards the political and ethnic groups, and fighting corruption in such situation where the country is engaged in war and foreign interference, is not possible.

Farkhri told BBC that the office of oversight and anti-corruption of Afghanistan is only able to collect evidences against the corruption officials, which will be used once an open environment is provided by the government of Afghanistan to fight corruption.

He said the office of oversight and anti-corruption of Afghanistan does not have an open hand, and can not act independently against the corrupt individuals and officials.

Ghulam Hussain Fakhri has served as a senior military General during Dr. Najibullah’s government. He has also served in the Afghan intelligence department – National Directorate of Security (NDS) for many years, and was recently appointed as deputy NDS chief.

The international community has long been criticizing the government of Afghanistan for growing corruption in the government institutions, and lack of strict measures and government’s will to fight graft in the country.

No major steps have been taken by the Afghan government to fight corruption, despite numerous reports suggest that high level government officials of Afghanistan are involved in corruption cases.

Meanwhile, the Transparency International has consecutively placed Afghanistan among the top three nations with most corruption, during the past two years. (KP)
