ANSA Seeks toEnsure Quality Petroleum Distribution

KABUL - Just one third of Afghanistan's Needed Petroleum Supplies (ANSA) - about one million tones per year - are imported legally, an official from the Afghanistan National Standards Authority (ANSA) said on Tuesday.

Abdurrahman Khateer, ANSA's deputy head, said that the body had recently undertaken operations in Afghanistan's western ports to cut down on the import of low quality petroleum.

"We prevented the entry of hundreds of oil tankers, and our bold decision persuaded the traders to not import low quality oil," Khateer said. "They started seeking new alternatives, but it's a fact that oil has been smuggled in Afghanistan throughout the years."

ANSA has started a mobile lab service to ensure the distribution of quality petroleum in pump stations, as low quality petroleum imported into Afghanistan is in some cases mixed with chemicals and water.

"In joint coordination and harmony with other entities, we will soon start our lab activities to check the oil tanks," Khateer said. "If the quality of oil in stations does not meets the requirements and standards of ANSA, the violators would be accountable according to the prevailing laws."

ANSA has said that prior to this, the oil and liquid gas enterprise had the responsibility of checking the quality of petroleum, but the enterprise lacked necessary equipment. (Tolo News)
