US Fighting Against People it Trained: Aziz

ISLAMABAD - The US-led war on terror has failed to achieve its objectives, creating more problems for countries in the region, a top Pakistani diplomat says.

“The war has achieved less and caused more damage, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz told reporters in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Stability in Afghanistan was central to peace in Pakistan, he said, explaining: “If there is large-scale fighting in Afghanistan, there would be spillover effects here as well.”

America was fighting a wrong war, employing flawed tactics and against the wrong people, he believed, claiming: "The US is now fighting those who were trained, armed and funded by it during Russian invasion of Afghanistan."

As a result of the anti-terror campaign, the people of Pakistan’s northwestern tribal region had turned against their government. Some criminal elements had sneaked in the region to inflame the situation, he alleged.

About negotiations with the Pakistani Taliban, the advisor said: “Some contacts are being established; we cannot predict the outcome but efforts are ongoing.”

He also lashed out at the US for drone attacks in tribal areas, saying the superpower was unaware of core tribal values and traditions. As a consequence, the strikes had not yielded intended results, he concluded. (Pajhwok)
