IEC Kabul Office Attacked Second Time

KABUL - Four insurgents armed with RPGs and automatic guns opened fire on the Independent Election Commission's (IEC) headquarters in the Pul-i-Charkhi neighborhood of Kabul Saturday afternoon.

The attack marked the second time in less than a week that the IEC office in Kabul has been assaulted. At the time of writing, clashes were still ongoing between security forces and militants outside the office.

No casualties have been reported and IEC officials said all staff members who were in the office when the attack began made it safely to a secure location.

The attack began when militants hiding in an adjacent building began firing RPGs at the entrance of the building, eyewittneeses said. None of the assailants attempted to enter the IEC office, but a steady stream of automatic gunfire rained down on the building and then security forces once they arrived on the scene.

The Afghan Special Forces were called in to neutralize the militants, according to TOLOnews reporter TareqMajidi who is on the scene.

Afghan police have blocked off Pul-i-Charkhi road, which runs in front of the IEC office.

Only seven days remain before Afghans head to the polls for presidential and provincial council elections. (Tolonews)
