MPs Call for Wide Participation in Election

KABUIL - Afghan MPs on Monday called on people to participate in the presidential and provincial council elections to show the insurgents that violence cannot keep people from voting.

"Your wide participation in the election will be for the future of the country and to strengthen the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," MP Saleh Mohammad Saljuqi said.

The MPs have asked the presidential candidates to accept the result of the elections peacefully in order to prevent a disaster from happening.

"We have eight candidates, one of which will win in the first or second round," MP Sadiqzad Neli said. "Those who win the election will say that the election was transparent, and those who do not win will say it was not. This situation will devastate Afghanistan."

The MPs had summoned the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) and the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) officials to parliament, but did not show up. IEC officials apologized for not coming because of their busy schedules whereas ECC officials did not comment. The MPs accepted IEC's apology, but were furious that ECC officials did not come nor give reason as to why they did not attend.

This past week insurgents targeted a few regional IEC offices as well as their main office in effort to stop preparation and involvement in the 2014 elections. Insurgents continue to warn the public about the consequences of participating in elections.

Security forces have declared that they are prepared and the police are on alert to maintain the security of the elections. Security organizations have sent more troops throughout the country to polling centers for Saturday's event. (Tolonews)
