Abdullah leads Ahmadzai in Early Results

KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday released partial results from last week’s presidential elections, with Abdullah Abdullah leading his closest rival Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

The IEC officials put 10 percent of the votes counted so far at 506,843. Speaking at a news conference in Kabul, Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani said the counted votes belonged to the country’s 26 provinces.

By which Abdullah Abdullah was at the lead by bagging 41.9 percent or (212,312) votes followed by Ahmadzai getting 37.6 percent or (190,561) votes.

Dr. Zalmai Rassoul stood third by achieving 9.8 percent or (49,821) votes, Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf 5.1 percent or (25,679) votes, Qutbuddin Hilal secured 2.7 percent or (13,536) votes and Muhammad Shafiq Gul Agha Sherzai secured 2.2 percent or (11,132) votes.

In addition, Daud Sultanzoyi secured 0.5 percent or (2,442) votes while Hidayat Amin Arsala bagged 0.3 percent or (1,360) votes.

As many as seven million people are believed to have participated in presidential and provincial council polls held on April, 5. 

Partial results of the election was scheduled to be made public a day earlier, but it was postponed to Sunday by the IEC.

At the same time, dozens of photos and video clips had been released on social media showing instances of widespread fraud in some polling stations.

The Independent Election Complaint Commission (IECC) on Sunday said 870 recorded complaints falling in (A) category could impact overall results of the April, 5 presidential and provincial council polls, an official said.

Addressing a press conference in Kabul, the IECC spokesman Nadir Mohsini said so far 3,274 complaints had been registered across the country, with 1,892 of them were supported by documents.

Under the commission’s procedure, 870 complaints supported by documents were falling in A- category, which could affect overall results of the ballot.

Of them, 338 complaints were against presidential runners, 537 against provincial council contenders and 1,017 against the employees of the Independent Election Commission (IEC).  (Pajhwok)
