Grave Sectarian Divide Fuels Iraq Crisis

Some of the renowned Middle Eastern countries suffering acute poverty and unemployment, bounced at the height of oppression, staging a series of demonstration till the despotic regimes replaced by a partial democratic or dictatorial setup. This pleasing regime change assumed to be associative of socioeconomic privileges were named, Arab Spring. Starting from Tunis, it succeeded sending shockwaves across the Muslim world, particularly, Arab world, observing authoritative monarchism. However, the Arab Spring had to decline in Syria, suffered a strong confrontation, aided by masses divided on sectarian grounds, yielding ongoing worst bloody conflict. Gradually, the intensity of the heat of the civil war, transferred to Iraq equally, disrupting its socio-political fabric. The militant group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, (ISIS) known for its brutalities, is led by Abubakr Al-Baghdadi (a self claimed Caliph), has emerged to be a dominant force, fighting Iraqi Army, in the quest to form an Islamic State in the occupied territory of both Iraq and Syria.  Reportedly, the group relies on donations from wealthy individuals in Gulf Arab states, particularly Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Iraq is a significant Middle Eastern country that borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. According to world fact book, around 97% of the country's 36,000,000 people are Muslims, mainly Shias 60%-65%, Sunnis 32%-37%, and ethnic Kurds. The political conflict has widened the sectarian rift between the two sect Shias, the ruler and Sunnis, the ruled.

Iraq is currently ruled by a Shiite cleric who has failed to deliver and rendered helpless to reverse, the mushrooming potential of militant force of ISIS. It is said that the discriminatory policies of Noori-Al-Maliki has primarily fueled the strife, letting Iraq burn, endlessly. However, furtherance of strategic interests of two old gulf rivals, Iran and Saudi Arabia are the serving agent, escalating the tension, intensifying war and facilitating civilian losses.

The ongoing conflict in Iraq has claimed thousands of lives. According to United Nation’s former report the violence claimed 2417 lives which include 1531 civilians, in the former month alone. If the war is not intercepted, a multiplied figure of civilian causalities should be expected, provided civilian are found on the receiving end of violence.

Previously, the Ameerul Momineen Abubakar Al-Baghdadi, a self proclaimed caliph publicly pronounced the establishment of independent Islamic State (caliphate) in the land it controls, in an audiotape message, urging all Muslims to migrate to the aforementioned state and pledged allegiance to him. He made a special appeal to those with practical skills, scholars, judges, doctors, engineers and people with military and administrative expertise, to come to the ascribed land. The self claimed caliph was also shown asking the jihadi fighters to escalate fighting in the holy month of Ramadan, which happened to be the noblest deed. This is of course a forged interpretation of Jihad sought to further their malicious designs. It is of course a deliberate “Fassad”.

It is the uttered irrefutable fact; those who seek not to understand the harsh lines of history, turns a perishable falsehood. It is an undisputed fact, neither falsehood can be justified by thousands of supporting testimonials, nor can truth be beleaguered by hundreds of lies. Each of the two phenomenon, tend to exists with distinct disparity. The establishment of the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) renders one of such deception, anchored on the blood of innocents and unarmed citizens. It is said that the throng of terrorists that stationed in Iraq and Sham from across the world, have surpassed the brutality of Al-Qaida; thus sent a shock impulse over the spine of many states, including the US.

It should be learned that there are already fifty seven functional Islamic states that claims to be safeguarding the Islamic values, dogmas and rituals, enshrined in the Holy Scriptures. However, the ISIS pursuing the footsteps of the Taliban that had established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan pivoted on mass human rights violation. Similarly, the world observed ISIS demolishes the sacred and historic places such as shrines, mosques, and churches, exercises a narrow version of Islam rendering unacceptable for both Muslims and non-Muslims world, alike. Factually speaking the Muslims world suffers the height of intolerance, extremism and bad governance.

Apart from bad governance, there are multiple factors behind the escalating extremism yet it is malicious for being solely responsible for the widened unrest, plaguing the world over. It is one of the findings of Pew Global Attitude, highlighted in its former poll that underlines high concern about religious extremism in the Muslim countries. It should be learned that states can be built by a disgruntled group, relying on granted warheads and weapons, but can’t be run without clearly laid principles, universally accepted system of governance a profound self-reliance and harmonious coexistence.

It should be learned that a united Iraq could only stabilize, provided the interests of governess are kept in prime consideration, politics exercised, upholding human rights and welfare of masses irrespective, cast, creed, ethnicity kept in deliberation. However, pursuing the principle of easier said than done, it can be assessed, the ongoing bloody conflict of Iraq can be put an end to, given all the regional and global influential partners come forth on the same page, denouncing violence of any sort, only transform Iraq into a welfare state, instead.
