“Iran is yet to Disclose Nuclear Achievements”

As the controversy over Iran's nuclear program is increasing, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has mentioned that Iran is yet to disclose its new nuclear achievements. Talking to thousand of Iranians, who had gathered to celebrate the anniversary of Islamic Revolution of 1979 in Tehran's "Freedom Square", he mentioned that Iran would never be ready to give up its uranium enrichments on the basis of unjust demands.

He mentioned during his speech, "Within the next few days the world will witness the inauguration of several big new achievements in the nuclear field." Iran has always insisted that Iran's nuclear program has been for peaceful purposes; however, the concerns about Iran's nuclear program have increased much in the recent times.

So far the West and UN have been trying to make Iran change its attitude by implementing different types of sanctions, but Iran's traditional rivals, like Israel, have been trying to carryout tougher measures to stop Iran from pursuing its nuclear program.

However at the moment it seems and it would be better that the issue is resolved through negotiations. The current stern tone of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahnmadinejad can be best taken as a public speech based on emotions. In fact, Iran is under great pressure to let the world check its nuclear secrets.

Though there has been inspection of Iran's nuclear plants by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) but that has not been circumstantial. There have been secrets about the plants in Qom and Tehran. In 2009, IAEA, through a secret document reported that Iran possesses "sufficient information" to construct a nuclear device and had even worked on developing a warhead with the capacity of being carried on a missile.

However, the agency accepted that their information is not based on concrete proof. Later on, the IAEA chief ElBaradei in September 2009 commented in an interview, "I do not think based on what we see that Iran has an ongoing nuclear weapons program," and accepted that Iran's nuclear weapons development has been "hyped".

Since then, the controversies about Iran's nuclear program have kept on rising and they are now very serious. On the other hand, there have been controversies about the raw material provided for these plants. There is ban now on providing Iran nuclear fuel rods; however Iran now claims that it has the capacity to build its own rods.

Iran has continued to pursue its nuclear program even after many controversies and opposition. The ban on Iran has reached to the extent of banning oil business with the country. The European countries that used to purchase a considerable portion of Iran's oil have now banned to import oil from Iran, which is Iran's main export.

Iran in reaction to the sanctions threatened that it would block the strait of Harmuz that is the main route for oil trade. The decision raised the tension between Iran and US and could easily create a fight. Currently, Iran is under great pressure by West to make its nuclear program transparent and evident.

Iran had depended on Russia and China for some sort of favor regarding its stand about its program and these two countries have backed Iran to a certain extent. Showing their dominant role in the region and avoid any sort of tension in Iran that may influence the region these two countries have been taking cautious steps.

They have made it clear that any sort of aggression would not be acceptable in this regard. However, they have not been able to reject the sanctions being implemented against Iran and they have to follow them – at least in their manifested policies.

There have been endeavors to resolve the issue through negotiations but they have not been able to produce tangible outcomes. With pressures mounting on Iran, Iranian government has agreed that it is ready for talks with the West regarding its program, yet it has made it clear that it should be on the basis of justice and should not be biased. Though Iran has tried to show that the offer from it has come from a position of strength, it is clear that it is being seriously affected by sanctions and oil embargo.

United Nations Organization in this regard has been urging Iran for transparent nuclear program. Keeping in view the mounting pressure from international community, UN Security Council imposed sanctions on Iran under resolutions 1737, 1747, 1803, 1929.

Under these sanctions, there is ban on the sale of material and technology related to nuclear enrichment and ballistic missile development to Iran; restriction on dealing with Iranian banks and individuals and restriction on major arms systems to Iran and strict inspections of air and sea cargoes.

Apart from these sanctions there are certain other sanctions imposed by the US and EU including the recent oil embargo. All these sanctions are imposed because US and other major countries in the world doubt Iran's nuclear program and fear any sort development of nuclear weapons in Iran.

Iran, on the other hand has been defending its position with the view that its nuclear program is friendly and does not possess any threat to the world and it has the right to follow such a program. Definitely all the capable countries of the world have the right to follow friendly and secure nuclear programs but it should also be kept in mind that there are many secret stories regarding the different nuclear plants in the world and they really pose a threat to humanity.

All the nuclear plants in the world must be made transparent and secret stories should be disclosed along with all the ill intentions and ambiguities. Strict check on all the nuclear plants in the world is necessary. That is only possible through IAEA but it should be given more strength and authority.

Further, it should not be biased and must not be politically inclined and above all must treat all the countries of the world alike as far as nuclear threats are concerned. Otherwise, the countries like Iran and the others that are gaining nuclear capabilities can not be stopped from developing nuclear weapons and the race of nuclear weapons may continue until the human extinction.
