Peace Parleys May Be Complex, Warns Diplomat

Peace Parleys May Be Complex, Warns Diplomat

August 16,2020

PESHAWAR - Intra-Afghan negotiations are expected to focus on an extended ceasefire and other issues, says a Pakistan-based diplomat.
The composition of an inclusive government and provision of $4 billion annually for keeping the Afghan security mechanism intact will also be on the table.
Dawn quoted the unnamed diplomat as saying a lot of focus would be on the ceasefire extension, and how it would materialise.
He asked whether the ceasefire meant an expansion to some no-combat zones or some other mechanism would be devised to achieve the goal.
While asking both sides to show flexibility to make the dialogue a success, he commended the Taliban for agreeing on the establishment of an inclusive government.
With regard to protecting women rights, the diplomat said it was for the Afghans to win guarantees from the Taliban on the issue.
Expected to begin in Doha within days, the long-awaited peace negotiations could be a long and complex process, the diplomat believed.
“We are hoping that something concrete would happen in about next 10 days,” said the envoy, who has been closely following the developments related to the peace and reconciliation drive.
“There would be no simple solutions,” he cautioned, while commenting on the talks, for which no formal agenda has been firmed up so far. (Pajhwok)
